How to Elevate Your Ponytail

It’s no secret that a ponytail is simple to achieve, looks lovely, and is a great way to keep your hair out of your face. But there are some downsides to ponytails; after five minutes of sweating, your ponytail may begin to fall, especially if you have long or thick hair. And so begins your search for the perfect way to keep that pesky tail up. The good news is that there are ways to keep your ponytail up. Read on for some helpful tips and steps to elevate your updo.

Merging Two Ponytails

  1. Use a hair tie to hold your hair at the spot on your head where you want the pony to sit. Let your face-framing locks and bottom layers down. Make sure the hair tie’s color matches your hair color, so it is as invisible as possible.

  2. Want to add more height to your ponytail? Take a rattail comb and carefully backcomb the hair strands near the hair tie. Make sure to comb the hair in the opposite direction (from the ends towards the base). Want more volume? Tease the top of the ponytail!

  3. While face-framing layers look beautiful, you may want to keep strands from getting into your face during physical activities like workouts. You can take the hair around your face and brush it onto your ponytail. Want to retain a few face-framing layers? Use your hands to set a few strands loose.

  4. Next, use a second hair tie to secure the bottom layers over the ponytail. Use one hand to hold the hair over the ponytail, and with your other hand, put the hair tie around the hair. Make sure the second ponytail sits in the center.

  5. Use your hands to merge and soften the two ponytails. Make sure to remove lumps and cover the middle tie with your hair. You can use a brush to make the ponytail smoother and voluminous. And finally, you can apply a little hairspray to tame flyaways and smoothen your hair.

Use Bobby Pins

  1. Backcomb your hair and pull it into a high ponytail on the top of your head. Use a hair tie to secure the pony in place.

  2. Grab the ponytail in one hand and lift it. Take two bobby pins in your other hand and apply them to the ponytail vertically across the hair tie. Make sure the bobby pin’s color is as close to your hair color as possible. The pins will help elevate your updo!

  3. Brush your hair to remove lumps and make it look and feel smooth. You can gently push the ponytail up from the base to add more volume and help conceal the bobby pins.

  4. Apply a little hairspray to give your updo a finishing touch and to prevent flyaways from getting into your face.
