How Long Can You Expect Extensions to Last?

How Long Can You Expect Extensions to Last?
Hair extensions are a go-to for adding instant length, volume, and thickness to their hair. They allow you to switch up your look instantly and sport long and luscious hair for any occasion. Human hair extensions look natural and blend seamlessly with your hair, letting you flaunt your favorite hairstyles.

But how long do extensions last? This is a common question that many people ask, and in this post, we'll discuss the average lifespan of different kinds of human hair extensions.

So, without further ado, let's look at how long hair extensions last!

How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

Clip-in Hair Extensions

Clip-ins are the most popular extensions on the market because they are non-permanent and easy to install and remove. They come in individual hair wefts with clips attached at the bottom. Simply snap open the tiny clips and apply the wefts to your hair; it's as easy as that!
So, how long do clip-in extensions last? The lifespan of these extensions depends on how often you use them and how well you care for them. They can last four to seven months with proper care, even if you wear them regularly. And if you use them occasionally, they can last more than a year.

Tape-in Hair Extensions

As the name suggests, tape-in extensions involve a tape adhesive to hold them to your hair. And like the clip-in extensions, tape-ins come in the form of individual hair wefts but with a tape adhesive at the base instead of clips. Your stylist will remove the protective cover from the tape and then strategically install the wefts to your hair.
Tape-in hair extensions last four to six months, depending on the level of care they receive. But you'll have to visit your stylist every six weeks for adjustment and maintenance of the wefts. Ensure not to brush your tape-in wefts when they're wet because it can damage them and reduce their lifespan.

Sew-in Extensions

The installation process for sew-in extensions involves braiding your hair into cornrows and then sewing the extensions onto the braids with a special thread and needle. These extensions are more on the permanent side and last around eight weeks.

With that in mind, it’s not a good idea to wear sew-in extensions for more than four months because they can slow down your natural hair growth. Plus, make sure to keep your scalp and nape moisturized and in deep condition once a week.

Fusion/Pre-Bonded Extensions

These are individual hair strands installed by gluing them to the root of your hair. Fusion extensions are more popular because they look entirely natural and add more volume to your hair. However, the installation procedure for this extension is tedious, time-consuming, and costly.

On average, fusion or pre-bonded extensions last three to four months. And as with any extensions, the exact lifespan of fusion extensions depends on the level of care they receive. Make sure not to use heat tools or apply oils or serums to your hair because they can make the bonds come loose. Plus, you'll need to visit a salon every two to three months to have the extensions adjusted.

Micro Links

Micro link extensions come as tiny hair wefts. These wefts are attached to small portions of your hair using the tiny metal or silicone beads at the tip of each weft. The installation process doesn't involve glue or heat.

Micro links last three to four months on average. And with proper care, you can increase their life to over five months. Plus, you'll have to go to your stylist every two or three months to adjust the extensions because your natural hair's growth can make the wefts come loose.
